HAWKHEAD SCORES ON DEBUT IN OPENING DAY BEDFORD WIN
Not 72 hours prior to the opening game of the season, he was a tiger… just the wrong type. But for Alfie Hawkhead, he had not only moved down from Castleford tom southern side Bedford, he was eager to make an impact right from the off, and he did just that!
Starting in the halves, a position not new to him from his time at the Castleford Reserves setup, Alfie wanted to steer his new team to victory. After a nervy start away at North Herts Crusaders, the visitors soon hit the ground running, storming into a lead. Shortly after half time, Alfie showed experience and quality, by supporting his team mate for a simple pass for him to run in the clear to score on debut – a moment I’m sure he could have only dreamed of.
Director of Rugby, Rob Ashton spoke highly of the debutants post-match, and highlighted the structure of the team that went thorough the half back pairing. With the coaching setup at Bedford evolving and creating a more professional atmosphere, there is surely more to come from Alfie and the entire Tigers squad.
